Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez each earned their first career win as the Jets went into Houston and beat the Texans 24-7. Sanchez completed 18 of 31 passes for 272 yards with a touchdown and interception but it was the defense that stood out. The Jets put pressure on the quarterback and held the Texans offense to 183 total yards. The defense made Texans quarterback Matt Schaub uncomfortable in the pocket and hit him eight times including two sacks.
On offense, the Jets got their running game going in the second half as Thomas Jones ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in the game. Rookie Mark Sanchez played like a veteran on third downs.
A lot of people think of the Texans as a playoff team but the Jets made them look otherwise. The Jets held Texans running back Steve Slaton, who rushed for 1,282 yards in 2008, to just 17 rushing yards.
Rex Ryan’s defense made a statement today but the next two weeks are going to be tough as they host the Patriots and Titans. At least they are home in those games. We’ll find out if the Jets’ defense is really this good or if the Texans are not as good as everyone thought. Tonight the Jets can celebrate for a great game played but it’s back to work Monday because it’s not going to get any easier next Sunday.
