Difference in Yankee Stadium Volume

Everyone who talks Yankees baseball has commented on how quiet the new Yankee Stadium is compared to the old one. The loudest moment at the new Yankee Stadium is arguably Jeter’s record breaking hit on September 11 against the Orioles. Another loud moment at the new stadium was A-Rod’s game tying ninth inning home run off Twins’ closer Joe Nathan in game two of the ALDS. Although these moments are the loudest at the new Yankee Stadium, they don’t compare to the loudest moments at the old Yankee Stadium.

One reason for the difference in stadium volumes is the construction of the stadiums. In the old stadium, the seats were closer to the field and players would say they felt like the fans were right on top of them. The new stadium is bigger and more spread out than the old one. It also holds less fans. With less fans being further back from the field, it’s hard to match the volume of the old stadium. The old stadium held well over 56,000 people and the new holds just over 52,000 people.

There are also 86 years worth of games to get sound samples of at the old stadium compared to one season’s worth at the new one. The old stadium had so many more classic moments that gave fans a reason to be loud compared to the handful of big moments the new stadium has had in it’s first season.

The price of tickets is another difference maker. The corporate world is sitting closer to the field because they can afford the overpriced tickets. Shirts and ties don’t get too loud. The loud fans have been pushed further away from the action if they can even get into the stadium.

It’s hard to compare 86 years worth of classic moments to one year of moments. The amount of games are incomparable. The first season at the new stadium hasn’t even been completed yet. The new stadium will have it’s loud moments but won’t touch the noise the old stadium made. The ghosts made voices louder. Hopefully the ghosts have moved across the street.
