Hofstra Cuts Football Program

There won’t be anymore Pride at Hofstra University when it comes to football. The university announced today that they are cutting their football program citing low interest from the area and high costs. Hofstra, part of the Colonial Athletic Association, ends its football program after 69 years. Just weeks ago another member of the Colonial Athletic Association, Northeastern, dropped their football program.

In a statement, Hofstra president Stuart Rabinowitz said, “The cost of the football program, now and in the future, far exceeds the return possible from an FCS program, which does not generate significant national interest. Given that, along with the low level of interest, financial support and attendance among our students, our alumni and the community, the choice was painful, but clear.”

Hofstra went 5-6 in 2009 including a win against James Madison who ranked 7th in the FCS at the time.

Notably Hofstra football players are Saints receiver Marques Colston and former Jets receiver Wayne Chrebet.
