A good sports discussion between two knowledgeable people can be insightful and entertaining even if, and sometimes more if, the two parties are in disagreement. There’s something about having an opinion, giving information to support the opinion, and trying to persuade someone else that your opinion is correct (or should at least be acknowledged) that gets the blood flowing.
What’s not so good about sports disagreements is how some people become disrespectful during the discussion. The discussion turns into an argument and sometimes a personal attack. This is seen often on fan forums and boards. It’s also found often in the comment sections of articles and blogs. Fans use inappropriate language, don’t gather all the information, and make opinions based on their biased views. Not all fans are like this, however, but I’m sure most of you have read forums or comments that are filled with these kind of people.
These disrespectful fans don’t take the time to put together thoughtful, statistically proven statements. They’d rather throw out curses and say their team is the best and your team sucks.
While we’re on the subject of “biasism”, it seems more and more blogs and writers think more with their hearts and less with their heads. Not to say that’s bad, but you can tell when a blog or article is written by a “fan” not an unbiased writer. Blog owners can do whatever they want though. I’m not saying there is a right or wrong, but the unbiased writer is a better read than the biased one (at least in my opinion). A lot of these blogs are good for entertainment and good for the fan of the team the blogger is biased toward and that’s usually the purpose of the blog or article.
I bring this up because there’s a blog that’s supposed to be about New York sports, similar to this blog, but it’s obvious which New York teams the author likes and even more obvious which New York teams the blogger doesn’t like (or hates for that matter). The thing is that this blogger has coined himself the “New York Sports Guy” (trying to be like Bill Simmons who is “The Sports Guy” and formerly “The Boston Sports Guy”). How can he be the “New York Sports Guy” if he doesn’t take an unbiased approach to all New York sports. I would consider the “New York Sports Guy” as someone who has unbiased opinion on all New York teams and sports. This blog I speak of (which I won’t mention the name) is for entertainment purposes, that’s for sure, but he shouldn’t consider himself the “New York Sports Guy”. I must say I do enjoy reading this blog, but only to be entertained, not for sports information.
