The once lovable Brett Favre had many fans. He wasn’t only loved by cheese-heads, but also by fans of other teams throughout the nation. The gunslinger won over fans because of his child-like view of the game and great play with a small town team. He has lost a good amount of fans since his bitter breakup with the Packers. His waffling the last two offseasons about retiring or not has also lost him fans. When Favre’s Vikings took on the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship, was there anybody other than Viking fans rooting for Brett Favre?
Jet fans weren’t rooting for Favre. Not after he “assaulted” the team over the summer by asking for a release because he was going to retire and then throwing them under the bus about the injury report. Packer fans sure weren’t rooting for Brett. After the divorce that occurred two years ago do you blame them? Cowboy fans wanted the Saints to pound Favre after he and the Vikings ran up the score against their team the prior week. Fans of the other two teams in the NFC North, the Bears and Lions, didn’t want to see Favre in the Super Bowl.
The media loves Favre because he’s a story. Chalk one up for Favre. They would have liked to see Favre go all the way. A 40-year old quarterback taking a team over their last hurdle would have made a great story for the media. The cast of “There’s Something About Mary” probably wanted Favre to have success because they worked with him when he was at the peak of his respected fame. His fame now isn’t respected by all. When he was a Packer and a acted like a kid on the field, he was respected. His actions over the course of the last two years isn’t respectable.
We’ve learned something about Favre over the last two years. He is selfish. It’s about him first. He does what he wants to do without considering others. He wanted out of the Packers – He got out. He wanted out of the Jets – He got out. If there are any true Favre fans still out there not in the Minnesota area please tell us what you still love about him. We’d love to hear it.
Favre’s last pass as a Packer was an interception against the Giants in the NFC Championship game two years ago. His last pass this season was an interception in the NFC Championship game. Is he going to end his career like that? He didn’t last time.
Favre is going to waffle again this offseason and then waffle some more. He’s going to go back and forth between retirement and coming back for one more year. I’m not certain of what his decision will be and I’d be an idiot to take a guess, but if he does come back at least we’ll know what team it will be with. I just hope he doesn’t screw the Vikings over and say he is going to retire and then get an itch to come back during training camp, after the Vikings acquired a new starting quarterback. Then the list of anti-Favres will expand.
