Super Bowl “Party”

CBS expects over 100 million people to watch the Super Bowl today. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest parties of the year for some people. Several different types of people watch the Super Bowl and they do it for all different reasons.

First you have the socialites. These people watch one football game annually and it’s the Super Bowl. They know Peyton Manning from one of his many television commercials and Reggie Bush from him dating the Kardashian girl. They won’t watch the game. They’ll be sucking down some mojitos somewhere away from the TV. They’re more into the social aspect and party scene than the football.

You also have the gamblers. I’m not talking about the nickel and dimer either. I’m talking about the guy who has at least a few thousand tied up in this game. He’s going to sweat it out with the die-hards and root hard for a certain score or outcome. This isn’t about football or love of the game. It’s about money. Period.

Then you have the front-runners. These people come out of the woodwork and are fans of the Colts or Saints. They haven’t paid attention all season, but today they are die-hards. Some front-runners are even fans of other teams, but they go to a party where people don’t know their fan roots and can get away with being a fan of either Super Bowl contender. Congratulations to you sir. Fraud.

Then there are the actual fans of the Super Bowl teams. They deserve respect on this glorified day. They’ve been there every week and they deserve what this day brings them. Win or lose they are true fans and should be proud that their team made it to the big game. Not much else to say about this group. They are lucky.

Finally you have people like us; Giants and Jets fans who do not have a dog in the fight. Some of us would rather see one team win over the other, but what does it matter? Our team is not in it. We can’t feel the joy of a victory or sorrow of a loss. Even if the team we are “rooting” for wins, it doesn’t mean a thing. We’re not going to be happy. We’ll watch the game because we love football and it’s a social gathering, but we’re pissed it’s not our team in there. We may gamble to make the game more interesting, but it’s not the biggest of deals. Jet fans should be even more pissed today that the Jets were 30 minutes away from being in this game. Peyton Manning was too good though. Too bad.

I never understood Super Bowl parties. At least not for die-hard fans of other teams. What’s to party about? My team’s not in it. I’m not going to party for two teams I’m not a fan of. A party makes me think of having fun and being happy. I’m not having fun knowing it could’ve been my team in there. I’m not happy because I don’t have a dog in the fight. I’m not going to party when the players on my team are part of the 100 million viewers rather than part of the 140+ guys that are in football uniform today.

However you watch the game and whoever you are, have fun and be safe. For you Giants and Jets die-hards let’s hope one of us are in this game soon.
