How the Rest of the Jets Off-Season Should Play Out

Jets have traded for CB Antonio Cromartie which changes everything for the Jets. Don’t read too far into this article. Take it for what it was before the trade.

There is a lot of noise surrounding the Jets tonight and working under realistic terms and with rumors that have surfaced, here is my best case scenerio of how the off-season should play out for the Jets:

- Trade Kerry Rhodes to the Arizona Cardinals for Anquan Boldin.
- Don’t match an offer for Leon Washington and accept a compensatory second round pick. By acquiring Cromartie, the Jets may not need the additional second round pick and if a team doesn’t make an offer to Washington, the Jets would be happy to keep him.
- Sign Adalius Thomas at outside linebacker.
– Make an offer to the Panthers for CB Richard Marshall who was tendered for a second round pick and hope they don’t match it. (via David Wyatt of Gang Green Nation)* Jets have acquired cornerback Antonio Cromartie from the San Diego Chargers.
- With the 29th pick in the draft, select the next highest rated player on their board among RBs or DEs.*
- With a second round pick, select a player at the position they didn’t in the first round at RB or DE.*

* If the Jets can’t get a cornerback through free agency then things change (I’m not expecting the Jets to trade for Antonio Cromartie [Oh how wrong I was] or Nnamdi Asomugha). The final three points of the scenario become:

- Sign a RB like Chester Taylor, Willie Parker or a different veteran. (They could do this in the first scenario too, which would mean they wouldn’t need to draft a RB in the 1st or 2nd round)
– With the 29th pick in the draft, select a CB like Myron Lewis (Vanderbilt), Donovan Warren (Michigan), Perrish Cox (Oklahoma State) or Kyle Wilson (Boise State). No need to use that 29th overall pick on a CB now with Cromartie coming.
- With two second round picks, select a DE and a DT or S or add depth at OL.

What do you think the Jets should do this off-season?

  • I think the should keep Thomas Jones as a short yardage back. If Parrish cox is available when we pick, the grab . him, other a DE will do or WR . I like Leon Washington, but if someone is willing to deal a 2nd rd for him, then adding another run stuffer or LB for depth is always good.

Thanks for the comment. Thomas Jones is due to be released.

  • Ganggreen:

There is no way we should part with Washington for a second rounder. Yes, he is coming back from injury but the quality of his play demands a first round pick and not a second.
We should trade Rhodes for Rolle and give the Cards a third rounder next year then we could seal the deal for an upgrade in two mayor positions on our roster. Thomas Jones should get tendered as well but if we lose him through free agency we are allowed to pick up a player of the same pay to replace him, as per the restriction rules for the uncapped year. We could then pick up another impact player on defense or offense. As far as corner goes i would not bother going after Asomugha i would rather go after Dante Robinson he is younger and is faster and has more left in the tank. I would not settle for Marshall but i would not mind having Cromartie on our secondary. I also find it impossible that we will be able to give enough for the services of C. Taylor so forget about that move it is not going to happen. With all the money we are saving up with Thomas Jones and some other players like Sheppard and Rhodes we have money to sign a good defensive lineman to play for a long time and not a old player that has maybe one or two years left in the NFL. Here is to a good off season for the Jets. Go Jets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Rich:

I disagree with Washington. The draft is deep this year and getting another 2nd rounder for a guy that missed the end of last year and the playoff run would be worth it. He’s not a starting running back and has never carried the full load so he doesn’t warrant a first round pick by any means. Rhodes for Rolle isn’t going to happen – Doesn’t make sense. Thomas Jones is going to be released then they are going to try to re-sign him. What good defensive lineman do you want the Jets to sign with “all the money they saved up”? There’s nobody amazing available that the Jets can sign through the uncapped rules. The draft is going to be key for the Jets. The Jets aren’t going to be major players in free agency.

    Thanks for the post.

Yes, i know what you are saying. The point that i am trying to make is that we have never been good at getting porper reward for the players we lose. Do you remember J. Vilma he is one of the main reasons that the Saints went and won the Super Bowl. Do you agree witht the compensation we received for him. The Broncos are asking for a 1st rounder for Marshall and they will get it. As far as saying he is not a starting running back i don’t agree with you. With the way the NFL has transformed the RB possition there are usually more than one starting back. I would put Washington as a starting cast calliber back for sure. Anyone that picks him up will have a first round talent running back to share the backfield with a power back that can be a force in the NFL for anyone. Rolle is going to leave the Cards through free agency anyways why would the Cards who are intersted in Rhodes anyways not want to swap players. The Cards are looking to replace the safety position and the interest they have shown for Rhodes is very real. I would then offer to give the Cards a third rounder for Boldin next year for his services and that could be a realistic trade i think. If and when the Jets lose Jones though some other team signing him in free agency would allow us to replace him with the same monitary salary as Jones and we both know that it is a high amount of money. The Jets don’t have a third or a fouth i think in this years draft and those have been good rounds historically for us. First and second round are going to demand more money in salary and even though it is an uncapped year how will it affect us in the coming of a salary cap year in the near future? I personally think that the Jets will benefit more through trades that through the draft. That is only my opinion. Thanks for your feed back. I enjoy good blogs.

  • Rich:

Vilma didn’t fit into the 3-4 defense Mangini uses. Had to get whatever they could for him. I didn’t say Washington can’t be a starting back, I said he hasn’t been. Of course he fits into a two-RB system but he can’t do it alone. A 2nd rounder will be more than enough for Washington. Rolle is going to be released so a trade isn’t going to happen for Rhodes. The 29th pick in the draft doesn’t get crazy amount of money so I’m not worried about finances with drafted players. Thanks for the response.

  • Rob M:

I don’t see the Jets using their 1st 2 picks on a RB. They will probably pick the best DE or CB available at #29 and then maybe get a slot receiver in the 2nd round. Look for OL and DL depth with their 5th, 6th, and 7th round selections.

  • Rich:

If they get a CB like Richard Marshall then they won’t need to go CB at #29. They probably won’t get Marshall so a CB is definitely the way to go at #29 because that’s a bigger need than DE. We don’t want Dwight Lowery the #2 cornerback. With no TJ, Leon or veteran signing, how else will they get a RB? They are in desperate need of a veteran running back but are they willing to dish out some dough? I’m going by “ifs” here, obviously and a lot of things have already changed on the free agent front for the Jets since I wrote this. There’s the possibility of still getting TJ back too (which I doubt). Also, if they make the trade for Boldin, they wouldn’t need to go slot WR in round 2. I was doing there moves in order to make it work out.

  • Joe:

I think the Cromartie trade is great! They get another lock down for peanuts. Then, they should go and get Brandon Marshall or Anquan Boldin. A 3rd rounder is not a bad move. They will then use their picks on another solid back like Shonn Greene. I don’t care if Leon Washington or Thomas Jones leave. They can replace them, but may not need them with Sanchez and his new targets. Also, go and get Adalius Thomas. These moves would make them more dangerous than anyone in the AFC.

  • Rich:

I agree, for a 2011 third-rounder they can’t go wrong. I totally agree with getting Adalius Thomas too. Thanks for the comment!

  • Ganggreen:

Do you guys know how un likely it is to land another Shonn Green. It is not as easy as you guys may think. I hope they do land a good back up to spell Green and Washington. Adalius Thomas has expresed his desire to return and play for his old coach Rex Ryan. If the Pats do release him how will we be able to pick him up. I think i heard somewhere on line that if a player gets released and they are not free agents we are allowed to try and pick them up. If i am wrong please let me know? A third rounder for Rhodes would have been a whole lot better than a fourth and a seventh rounder. I wonder if they even tried to trade Rhodes for Rolle and a conditional pick. I still think that we could have made a much better move if we tried at lease. The Cardinals lost Rolle and i think they got nothing but farewell from Role if that. What do you guys think????? Go Jets!!!!!

  • Rich:

Yes, the Jets would be allowed to sign any player that was released by a team.

Rolle was a FA, couldn’t have traded Rhodes for Rolle. Thanks for the comment.
