Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium

December 30, 2010 will be the date of the first ever Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. The bowl will feature the number three team in the Big East and the number six team in the Big 12.

This will be the first bowl game to take place at Yankee Stadium since 1962.

“Football’s always been a love of my dad: he played it, he coached it,” Hal Steinbrenner told The Star Ledger. “We made it a point when we built this stadium to ensure it was a year-round, multi-sport venue, and it will be that. There is more to come. Football is going to be a big part of it in 2010, and football’s going to be a big part of it in the years to come.”

Yankee Stadium May Host Boxing Match

A boxing match between Yuri Foreman, the 154-pound World Boxing Association champion, and Miguel Cotto may be fought at Yankee Stadium. The match is currently set to take place at Madison Square Garden on June 12, but according to the New York Times, boxing promotor Bob Arum wants to move the match to Yankee Stadium in order to accommodate more fans.

The Yankees and Arum are discussing the possibility of moving the bout to June 5 if the Yankees can reschedule a bar mitzvah that is planned to be held at Yankee Stadium on that day.

Arum told the Huffington Post, ”The Yankees want to make a deal, we know we can make a deal, they’re just working through a problem at Yankee Stadium, but you wouldn’t believe it if I told you. They’ve leased out some lounges for this bar mitzvah and part of the deal was for a half hour or so, they could use the big screen in center field to show pictures and all that sort of stuff. Obviously you can’t do that if there’s fights going on.”

Giants and Jets Make Bid for 2014 Super Bowl

The new Meadowlands stadium may be the host of the 2014 Super Bowl. The Giants and Jets have made a bid to host the big game in 2014. New York Jets owner Woody Johnson tweeted, “We just announced that our new stadium is bidding to host the Super Bowl in 2014.”

A cold weather city has never hosted an outside Super Bowl. The Associated Press cites, “The NFL owners’ Super Bowl Advisory Committee allowed the bid despite the traditional requirement that host regions have a minimum temperature of 50 degrees or indoor stadiums.”

This year’s Super Bowl is being held in Miami. The 2011 Super Bowl is going to be at the Cowboys Stadium, in 2012 it will be at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and in 2013 it will be in the Louisiana Superdome.

College Football Becomes Trendy in New York Teams’ New Stadiums

The Yankees are doing it.  Now the Giants and Jets are.  The new Meadowlands Stadium that will be home to the Giants and Jets will also be home to Syracuse football.  Syracuse has agreed to play three games at the new stadium in the Meadowlands.  At the new Meadowlands, Syracuse will host Southern California in 2012 and Notre Dame in 2014 and 2016.  Notre Dame will also be in the area in 2010 when they play Army at the new Yankee Stadium.

College football is back in the New York Metropolitan area and hopefully will be here for a while.  Lacking major football colleges in the area, having games in the new Yankee Stadium and new Meadowlands Stadium does the trick.  It’s great to see college football get into the biggest market in America.  New York sports fans don’t get the chance to see college football in their backyard and this enables them to do so.
