On Tuesday, NFL owners will vote on the 2014 Super Bowl host city and it appears in all likelihood that New York will win the vote. New York’s top competitor is Tampa Bay, who hosted Super Bowl in 2001 and 2009. If New York wins the vote, it will mean that the 2014 Super Bowl will be the first ever outdoor Super Bowl in a cold weather city.

Since New York made its initial bid to host the 2014 Super Bowl several months ago, there have been many intriguing arguments made in favor of a cold weather Super Bowl and against a cold weather Super Bowl.

Robert Kraft, New England Patriots owner, told ESPN’s Chris Mortenson, “Here’s my prediction: If the (Super Bowl) game is played (in NY/NJ), it will be one of the most memorable ever.”

Mortenson also tweeted, “Wayne Weaver, warm-weather owner for Jacksonville, also believes NY/NJ Super Bowl is an idea whose time has come.”

Not everyone is in love with the idea of having a cold weather Super Bowl. The Tampa Bay Tribune ripped the idea of New York hosting the 2010 Super Bowl and threw some shots at NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell while doing it.

“Commissioner Roger Goodell, who talks a good game about making fans his paramount concern, is eager to place the sporting public in potentially brutal conditions at the open-air stadium about to open at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.

Tampa Bay’s four-minute presentation in Dallas will focus on the region’s success in hosting four Super Bowls, the temperate climate of the Suncoast in February and the reputation of Raymond James Stadium as one of the NFL’s most lauded facilities.

The essence of New York’s bid?

Hey, we’re New York.

That’s not nearly good enough, but Goodell is driving this subway car and he has considerable clout among the owners who pay his prodigious salary.”

Talk about sore losers. Sorry, but your city has hosted the Super Bowl twice within the last 10 years. We (New York/New Jersey/NorthEast) have NEVER had the privilege of hosting a Super Bowl. I am a major supporter of a cold weather Super Bowl and I’d like to see other cities like Philadelphia, Foxborough, Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago, Green Bay (Yes, Green Bay) and Denver host the Super Bowl one day. Why is it fair that just because we live in a colder climate we aren’t allowed to have the Super Bowl be played in our backyard.

The Tribune also adds;

“Awarding the Super Bowl to New Meadowlands Stadium might be the worst idea since Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty shook hands to participate in “Ishtar,” but the New York bid has momentum.

It also has the support of other Northeast owners like New England’sBob Kraft and Philadelphia’s Jeff Lurie, businessmen who are determined to lure the game to their own open-air facilities.”

I understand the argument that the Super Bowl should be played in near “perfect” conditions in order for talent to overcome. But this is football and teams don’t play in near “perfect” conditions throughout the entire season. If it was meant to be played in perfect conditions than they’d all be playing in domes or in Florida. Bad weather brings talent closer together, which isn’t a bad thing, and to be Super Bowl champions you have to find a way to win in any condition.

I’m not a believer in cold weather teams vs. warm weather teams either. Teams are made up of players who are from all parts of the country. The Jets, a “cold weather team”, has a quarterback from USC while the Falcons, a “warm weather dome team”, has a quarterback from Boston College. It’s not the players, it’s strategy and other factors that work into how teams play in certain kinds of weather. If you’re a good running team than you can probably handle the cold elements. If you rely on the pass and have more of a finesse team than maybe the cold weather doesn’t suit your style of play. But winning football teams need to have some balance in order to be able to compete in any weather, they need to be able to make adjustments on the fly, remain mentally tough, and find ways to win games played in temperature controlled domes as well as games played in 50 mph winds and hail. Nothing is ever “perfect” in sports or in life. Why should the conditions of the Super Bowl be fixed to be perfect?

I hope for the sake of other cold weather cities that the 2014 Super Bowl in New York (NJ) is a success and other cold weather cities receive the privilege to one day host a Super Bowl.
