The Nets traded Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, two first-round draft picks and cash to the Jazz for Williams.

The trade was a shocker, to say the least.

“I had talked to [Jazz general manager] Kevin O’Connor yesterday,” Nets general manager Billy King told ESPN. “He asked me would I do something. And I said no, then I called him back and asked, ‘I wonder if you’ll do this.’ And he said, ‘Let me look at it. We talked a couple times yesterday. And then I guess he visited with his ownership. I visited with mine. And this morning we came to an agreement.”

And just like that Deron Williams is a Net.

It looks like teams have learned something from the way LeBron James and Chris Bosh left Cleveland and Toronto, respectively. Neither of those teams were compensated for their losses other than receiving minimal assets in sign-and-trades.

After seeing what the Nuggets got for Carmelo and what the Jazz got for Williams, teams like the Hornets and Magic may look to trade their superstars, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard, before they hit free agency.

You never know, maybe next season the Knicks and Nets make blockbuster deals within 48 hours of each other again. The Knicks could trade for Paul and the Nets could trade for Howard.

You never know.

The Nets and Nuggets have reached a tentative agreement on a deal involving Anthony, multiple NBA sources told The Record. The deal is pending Anthony agreeing to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension.

If Anthony says yes, the Nets will get Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman from the Nuggets. In turn, the Nets will send Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round picks to Denver.

The Nets won’t do the trade unless Anthony agrees to the extension. They’re expected to meet with him during this All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles to try and convince him to join them.

It all comes down to Carmelo’s willingness to sign the extension with the Nets. The big deal – $65 million over three years – will not be available to Carmelo as a free agent after this season because of a new CBA.

Sports on Thursday night.

Last month Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov said the Nets’ involvement in a trade with Denver for Carmelo Anthony was over.

According to NBA.com, Prokhorov hasn’t changed his tune:

New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has not changed his mind about the franchise’s pursuit of Carmelo Anthony.

The Russian told team executives last month to end drawn-out trade talks for the Denver Nuggets All-Star forward and nothing has changed with the NBA trading deadline a week away, his spokeswoman said Thursday.

There were reports on Wednesday that the Nets and Nuggets had renewed talks about a deal for Anthony. However, Prokhorov spokeswoman Ellen Pinchuk said in an e-mail that the billionaire maintains his stance, despite the reports.

“Mikhail has not changed his mind,” Pinchuk wrote.

The NBA trade deadline is one week from today.

Less than a month after the New Jersey Nets pulled out of trade talks, the Denver Nuggets have re-engaged the Nets in discussions on a blockbuster deal for Carmelo Anthony, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

One source described talks as “progressing” and said they have been ongoing between Denver and New Jersey officials over a week. While the precise package being discussed was unclear, sources said talks have centered on a scaled-down package that still includes rookie forward Derrick Favors and draft picks.

Still, no one is sure if Carmelo Anthony would sign off on an extension with the Nets. That is the ultimate deal-breaker.

Perhaps this is the Nets saving face and saving themselves from being humiliated if they were to have a sit-down with ‘Melo and not get him to agree to sign an extension with the team.

Al Iannazzone of The Record tweeted that Prokhorov said, “It’s been too long and too expensive.”
