Yes, Yankee fans know how bad AJ Burnett has struggled this season. His struggles, combined with Javy Vazquez’s struggles and Andy Pettitte’s injury, have left the Yankees starting rotation in disarray. After CC Sabathia, the rest of the staff is more or less a question mark, which includes Phil Hughes, who started off red-hot but has cooled off of late. Through the rotation’s struggles, however, the Yankees still remain tied atop the AL East with the best record in baseball. There are reasons to remain optimistic that the Yankees rotation will finish the season strong; They have a promising young starter in Ivan Nova, Andy Pettitte’s injury is improving, Javy Vazquez has pitched well out of the bullpen, and I’m optimistic that Phil Hughes will right the ship. As for AJ Burnett, we can only hope he gives the team better outings than he has.

Then I ran into this guy, @sendAJAway, on Twitter…

Let me get my checkbook out… okay let me make it out to “The New York Yankees” for $5, seal the envelope, send it to the stadium and write “ATTN: Send AJ Away” on it. I’m sure that’s a great department over at the Stadium and they’re waiting so anxiously for my check. Yes! The Yankees are going to deposit my check into their brand new checking account specifically to help pay the rest of AJ’s contract when they release him as soon as they get enough $5 checks. Splendid, I’m giving to such a great cause!

One word comes to mind when thinking about this fool; Sad. Luckily enough, nobody is stooping so low as to follow this guy. He sent out some spam:

… and some more spam:

… and basically is a complete idiot. The Facebook page he is soliciting doesn’t work and he’s in the middle of building a website for his cause.

Alright, let’s get something straight: The Yankees are not getting rid of AJ anytime soon. So put your checkbooks back in your pockets and ignore @sendAJAway. Could the Yankees consider moving Burnett over the winter? Sure, but there won’t be a market for him (especially with his contract).

Hey, we know AJ has pretty much been atrocious this year, but let’s give him some encouragement rather than begging to ship him out because he’s going to be on the roster for the rest of the season whether @sendAJAway likes it or not.

I’m not sticking up for AJ by any means. He has been awful and probably shouldn’t still be in the rotation, but I’d rather try to find a place for him and get him on the right track rather than hoping he gets shipped out of here.

According to Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News, Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace will miss six weeks with a broken foot. Pace injured his foot Friday night in a preseason game against the Redskins.

With Pace expected to miss the first month of the regular season, similar to last year when he was suspended for the first four games of the season, the Jets’ depth at outside linebacker will be tested.

I expect the Jets to open discussions with former Raven and Patriot Adalius Thomas. Thomas was released by the Patriots several months ago and is still available.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated heard at first that Thomas wasn’t returning the Jets’ phone calls. He later spoke to Thomas who said, “I definitely want to play. There must be a miscommunication.”

Hopefully the two sides can get on the same page and the Jets can add Thomas to their outside linebacker rotation.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets appear to be ready for a split.

Wojnarowski says, “Sources insist it’s no longer a matter of if the Nuggets trade Anthony, but when, where and for whom he’s traded for.”

What will it take to get ‘Melo? According to Wojnarowski, “The Nuggets made it clear to teams they want young players and draft picks for Anthony, league executives said.”

Wojnarowski lists the Clippers and Nets as “most possible destinations”, places the Warriors and Rockets as “contenders” and the Bobcats as “sleepers”.

As for the Knicks, Wojnarowski isn’t optimistic — “With nothing to trade for Anthony, though, New York isn’t considered a strong contender in the eyes of Denver management.”

I respectfully disagree.

The Knicks can create a package around 22-year old Danilo Gallinari or 21-year old Anthony Randolph in addition to 23-year old Wilson Chandler or another player. Basically, the Knicks will dangle anybody but Amar’e Stoudemire out there. That should take care of the young and talented aspect of Denver’s asking price. Now on to draft picks. I don’t think the Knicks would be hesitant to offer Denver a future first rounder and even a couple of second rounders also.

The Knicks’ package may not be superb, but what do the Nets have in comparison? A 27-year old point guard in Devin Harris and a 22-year old center in Brook Lopez, both starters on a 12-win team. What am I missing here?

If I were the Knicks, I’d like to find out what the Nuggets think of an offer of Gallinari and Randolph plus a future first rounder. I don’t think that’s giving away too much either. Carmelo is an elite player and the chances of getting a player of his stature don’t come around often. It’s either you throw it all out there to get Carmelo in a trade or kiss him goodbye for good because he’s signing an extension with whichever team trades for him.

I agree with Tommy Dee of The Knicks Blog who wrote:

I think many fans agree and are excited about the prospects the team now has. But as I said before, you never pass on the opportunity to acquire a sure thing. Anthony is proven to be a game-changer, and Olympian and is an All-Star every year.

You never pass on the opportunity and you increase your chances by all means if you can. The Knicks can increase their chances by improving their package in several ways such as including both Gallinari and Randolph, and throwing in additional picks (to a certain extent however).

Amar’e Stoudemire should be getting in Carmelo’s ear and trying to persuade him to tell Denver to contact the Knicks. Denver won’t be doing Carmelo any favors, but Carmelo could tell them he’ll just play out his final year and leave them in free agency with Denver getting nothing in return when he departs. That may make a trade with Carmelo’s preferred team, for as much young talent and future picks as possible, more enticing.

Leave it to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports to rain on Knicks fans’ parade and hear that the hype about Carmelo Anthony wanting to play for the Knicks is overblown and that he would prefer to play with the Rockets more than the Knicks. Wojnarowski and Yahoo haven’t done much favorable reporting on the Knicks’ behalf this summer and it looks like that will continue. Their sources seem to hear different things than the rest of us hear from other NBA and Knicks writers.

Wojnarowski said:

Despite significant speculation the New York Knicks are the team that Anthony would most likely want to join, two sources close to him insisted the Knicks have been overstated as an object of his desire. Privately, Anthony has expressed more enthusiasm over joining the Houston Rockets than the Knicks, sources said.

After LeBron James met with teams during the first few days of free agency, Wojnarowski reported that the Knicks’ presentation lacked “preparedness and organization”. This after the Knicks had spent two years preparing for that meeting. He also initially reported that Donnie Walsh’s wheelchair turned off LeBron.

Am I being naive by thinking that ‘Melo wouldn’t prefer any team more than the Knicks? I don’t think so. There are so many reasons why, including basketball reasons, he would want to join the Knicks.

UPDATE

Alan Hahn (@AlanHahn) of Newsday tweeted, “The HOU over NYK talk comes from the fact that the Knicks have little to offer right now and therefore would have to wait. Don’t get played.”

He added, “The Knicks always seem to start out as the fav and within a week, once it’s obvious they don’t have anything to offer, another fav emerges.”

Tim Cowlishaw, writer for The Dallas Morning News and frequent guest on ESPN’s Around the Horn, boldly wrote that sources have told him Darrelle Revis will sign with the Jets this week (specifically Wednesday or Saturday).

A prediction like this one has not been made by others in the media and there have been no reports that suggest the Jets and Revis are even on the same planet. Cowlishaw innocently wrote that his “information was getting shot down right and left by those covering the Jets.”

He also wrote:

As for those who said I was making it up to get more followers: Does that sound like a good thing to do? I’ve worked for The Dallas Morning News for more than 20 years, ESPN for another seven. Is just making stuff up and having no clue about it a big part of my history?

Getting predictions wrong, yeah, I’ve done that two or three times. Two or three thousand times, I mean.

Throwing stuff against the wall with no idea whether or not it might stick? Not a real good way to maintain any shred of credibility.

If I learned anything from the LeBron James/NBA free agency saga this summer, it’s that just because someone heard something from a source either close to the team or close to the player, it doesn’t mean it is on point. Sometimes sources can be way off (intentionally or unintentionally).

What allows Cowlishaw’s report to hold some weight is the fact that the Jets and Revis have taken their talks private. Before, we were being given a lot of information and none of it was positive. Although I find it hard to believe that things have turned around so quickly, Cowlishaw’s report may, and hopefully for all Jets fans, be right. If this report turns out to be correct, I wonder which side gave in, or if both sides met somewhere in the middle.
