Newsday’s Alan Hahn also reported this morning on 1050 ESPN radio that the Knicks are not going to sign Allen Iverson.

Howard Beck said in an article:

“Although team officials were highly intrigued by Iverson, a four-time scoring champion, they finally decided that he posed too great a risk because of his long history of problems on and off the court.”

From the beginning, the Knicks were luke warm on the idea of signing Iverson. The fans and the media were the ones that made this story grow.

The Knicks host the winless Nets Saturday and the Celtics Sunday.

Allen Iverson to the Knicks. It’s a hot topic around New York since he and the Memphis Grizzlies parted ways. It feels like Donnie Walsh is going to put Iverson in a Knicks uniform. The whole city is in a trance over Iverson. It’s being discussed by anyone with sports knowledge around New York city. Although Iverson wants to go to a contender, contending teams probably won’t give Iverson a look because he wants to start and will bark if he doesn’t. This makes the Knicks a great team for Iverson. He can start and will score points in Mike D’Antoni’s offense.

The people who don’t want Iverson on the Knicks say he will stunt the growth of their young players such as Danilo Gallinari, Toney Douglas and Wilson Chandler. They’ll also say he doesn’t play defense and that’s what the Knicks are missing. To answer those people, the Knicks need a lot more than one strong defender and he can give the young players open looks when defenders key on him.

Iverson isn’t going to get the Knicks into the playoffs but he’ll waken up a fan base that needs a “brand name” on the team and will also sell some tickets. Bring AI to MSG, Donnie. Prove you can bring a “name” to the Knicks before 2010 when the pressure is on.

AI officially becomes a free agent Thursday at 6:00 p.m., if he clears through waivers, which is expected. All signs point toward the Knicks extending an offer to Iverson.

Allen Iverson and the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to part ways after a short lived marriage. A.I. played in three games with the Grizzlies, all losses, and averaged 12.3 points per game. Iverson could decide to retire, but if he doesn’t, it makes sense for the Knicks to sign him on a one year deal.

What would be the reason the Knicks shouldn’t sign Iverson? The Knicks are lifeless and Iverson still has some game left in him. At 1-9, Iverson can only help them. The Knicks don’t have a first round pick in next year’s draft so they have no reason not to try to win games. He won’t cost much either and they can release him at any point. It’s low risk for the Knicks. Signing A.I. will also put some like into the depressed and frustrated fan base.

Alan Hahn of Newsday says, “It could be an ideal situation for both parties. Iverson wants to go to a team that will allow him to dominate the ball, score and, of course, start. D’Antoni’s system will put Iverson in several pick-and-roll situations with plenty of shooters to kick to on the perimeter. No one will ever demand he play great defense and, of course, produce anything more than merely a playoff berth.” Hahn has some great points in his articles.

The rewards outweigh the risks as Iverson will insert some life into the Garden for a relatively cheap price. It makes sense on the business side of things. A.I. will bring fans to MSG and sell jerseys. People are saying it’s more unlikely than likely, but I see a deal getting done and Iverson a Knick shortly. My reasoning is easy; because why not sign A.I.?

The Knicks and point guard Ramon Sessions are close to coming to an agreement that would give the Knicks their first signing of the summer. Hopefully the two sides will get to an agreement by tomorrow and the Knicks can focus their efforts on other players. I still would like to see the Knicks go after Allen Iverson. It could be a win-win situation for both the Knicks and AI if they got together. With a one-year deal, the Knicks could win some more games, raise attendance for the season, get the the fanbase pumped up and Iverson could rejuvenate his play and work toward a better deal for the following season.
