Jets Week 6 Receivers and Notes

Jets receivers Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) and Brad Smith (quadriceps) are both doubtful for the Jets week six game against the Bills at the Meadowlands. They have not been ruled out yet but it seems unlikely they will play. David Clowney becomes the number two receiver and the Jets have signed former NCAA rushing record holder Danny Woodhead to the active roster as a receiver. Woodhead has been practicing with the offense all week out of the slot. The Jets are thin at receiver without Cotchery and Smith.

In other news, the FBI is investigating threats made to Braylon Edwards after he allegedly punched a man outside a Cleveland night club.

The Jets started the season 3-0 but have lost two straight since and are tied with New England for first place in the AFC East. Their offense and defense have taken turns having poor games the last two weeks. In their loss to New Orleans two weeks ago, the Jets offense looked horrible while their defense looked like one of the best in the NFL. Last week in the Jets loss to Miami, their defense was pushed around and beat by the wildcat but their offense played well. The Jets look to put it all together against the Bills on Sunday.

Braylon Edwards’ Impact on Jets

Braylon Edwards made an impact during his debut with the Jets in Miami on Monday night football. The Jets are hoping this is just the beginning. Edwards’ first reception as a New York Jet was a 3-yard touchdown from Mark Sanchez. He caught five passes for 64 yards in the game.

Looking at the box score, Edwards’ debut doesn’t seem too impressive. Five catches for 64 yards and one touchdown isn’t a great feat. It’s not an Austin Miles 250+ yard day with the Cowboys. You had to watch the game to know how impressive Edwards was in his Jets debut. The second pass he hauled in was a high throw from Sanchez that Edwards’ went up to get and made a sensational 17-yard grab. His fourth catch was diving grab down the left sideline for 34 yards that was originally called a touchdown but was, in my opinion, wrongly overturned.

With the Jets next best receiver, Jerricho Cotchery, being hampered by a hamstring injury, Braylon Edwards will have an even bigger impact on the Jets in weeks to come. He seems fresh and looks like he is out to prove everyone wrong. He has a big chip on his shoulder. With 11 games remaining in the season, I could see him ending the season with over 1,000 yards.

Braylon told the NJ Star Ledger, “I think we’re (Sanchez and Edwards) already comfortable with each other. Now the thing is moving forward and getting better and getting to where we can do it at a Peyton Manning-Reggie Wayne level. Right now, we’re comfortable with each other. But it’s just a start.”

Braylon has been shaking heads at practice, making great catches play after play. He’ll earn a nice new contract from the Jets if he shakes heads on Sundays. I see a big contract in his future.

Jets Lose to Dolphins on MNF

Rex Ryan and the Jets defense had absolutely no answer for Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, and the Dolphins wildcat on Monday night. Ronnie Brown scored from 2-yards out in the wildcat formation with 10 seconds left in the game to lift the Dolphins over the Jets 31-27.

The offense wasn’t the problem for the Jets. Mark Sanchez played well and Braylon Edwards played like he had been with the team for years. The defense, which has been the Jets strength, lost the game.

The Jets defense let Chad Henne, in his second career start, complete 20 of 26 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns. The Dolphins were 9-14 on third downs. The Jets also let speedster Ted Ginn Jr. get behind the secondary for a 53-yard touchdown.

“We made him look like Dan Marino,” Calvin Pace said referring to Henne. “They did what they want, and they did it at will.”

Last week it was the offense that bit the bullet, this week it was the defense. The Jets are tied with New England for first in the AFC with a 3-2 record and host the Bills on Sunday.

Sanchez, Edwards and Jets Ready for Dolphins, MNF

AFC East division rivals clash tonight as the Dolphins (1-3) host the Jets (3-1) in Miami. With a win, the Jets take sole possession of first place in the division after the Patriots lost to the Broncos on Sunday.

After starting 3-0, the Jets hit a bump in the road last week losing 24-10 in New Orleans. Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez turned the ball over four times including three interceptions and a fumble. Sanchez and the Jets need to put the loss behind them and have a chance to do that in Miami.

Jets coach Rex Ryan doesn’t think the loss to New Orleans will have a lingering effect on Sanchez. “He’s like a tiger,” Ryan said. “He’s going to come roaring back. There’s no doubt. I have 100 percent confidence in him, and I have confidence in our football team.”

Sanchez has a new target to throw to in Braylon Edwards. The Jets acquired Edwards from the Browns on Wednesday and he looked great in practice and will be inserted right into the action when the Jets offense takes the field.

Edwards counterpart, Jerricho Cotchery, said, “I know he’s going to add something great to this offense. We’ve got to smile about that because he’s a great player and he’s going to demand a lot of attention.”

Cotchery has been hampered by a hamstring injury and is listed as questionable for tonight’s game. This puts more of an emphasis on Edwards in the passing game. In his first game with the Jets, he will play a major role in the outcome of the game. Edwards, who has a great combination of size and speed, will need to catch whatever comes his way Monday night.

The Dolphins won their first game of the season last week against the Bills behind backup quarterback Chad Henne. This week, the Bills lost to the Browns 6-3. That win doesn’t look like such a great feat now. Henne will need to be efficient to give the Dolphins a chance to beat the Jets.

This will also be a matchup of the wildcat offense against the aggressive defense. The Jets will win if they shutdown Miami’s ground game.

Mark Sanchez will rebound nicely and Braylon Edwards will give him a nice big target to throw to. The Jets need to get their running game going early and can win this game if they don’t turn the ball over.

Tannenbaum is Boldest GM in NFL

No team in the NFL has made louder general managerial decisions than the Jets have the last two seasons. The Jets’ Mike Tannenbaum is the boldest general manager in the NFL. I’m sold that this guy can do anything. Last August he brought in Brett Favre from the Packers. Now he brings in wideout Braylon Edwards from the Browns. He flirted with the thought of acquiring Brandon Marshall and has been charged with tampering with 49ers draft pick Michael Crabtree. He’ll do anything to try to make his team better. He is bold and sometimes not careful enough (Favre injury report incident, Crabtree tampering charges) but it could payoff one day if the bold moves work out.

The Brett Favre experiment didn’t pan out although it was looking good at one time. At 8-3 Favre and the Jets looked poised for a deep playoff run but a biceps injury to Favre put a damper on that. It was worth the shot in my mind. Tannenbaum pulled the trigger on a trade that got the Jets the fifth pick in the 2009 draft in order to choose Mark Sanchez. Sanchez has played excellent for a rookie although he laid an egg against the Saints. Now he brings in a receiver who has some issues in and out of football. We have no idea how Braylon Edwards is going to pan out but he has such great potential that it is worth the shot. The Jets didn’t have to give up that much for him anyway.

Look at the Jets offensive starters. With Braylon Edwards, eight of the 11 starters are former first round picks. That is incredible. Out of the eight, the Jets have originally selected four of them.

It’s been obvious the Jets weren’t satisfied with the receivers on their roster. They were linked to several receivers for the last few months. Now Tannenbaum brings in a guy who has the ability to be a top receiver. He just needs to put it all together and stop dropping balls. Great move by Tannenbaum even though he has had some off the field issues. Bold move. What else will Tannenbaum do?

Braylon Edwards New York Jets

Braylon Edwards, who was at odds with the Browns organization and fans, will get a new start as a New York Jet. The Jets have desired a number one receiver for some time now and finally get a guy that has the potential to be a top receiver in the NFL. The Jets have flirted with several receivers in the last year including Plaxico Burress and Brandon Marshall among others.

The acquisition of Edwards does a lot for the Jets. He will open up the run game now that opposing defenses need to key on him and Jerricho Cotchery. This will give Thomas Jones and Leon Washington more running room. Edwards also gives the Jets a deep threat. He has great size and speed that’s not seen too often. The Jets have a lot of guys that catch the ball in between the hashes. Now, as Herman Edwards said on ESPN, Braylon gives the Jets a legitimate threat outside the numbers.

Edwards hasn’t lived up to the hype of a third overall draft pick but has the chance to start all over in New York. He drops a lot of passes though and if that continues he may be on the bad side of Jet fans. The Jets are hoping they are getting the Braylon Edwards that had 1289 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2007.

Jets Get WR Edwards from Browns

The Jets have a downfield threat at wide receiver now that they have acquired Braylon Edwards from the Browns. The Browns, who made a draft day trade with the Jets that allowed the Jets to draft quarterback Mark Sanchez out of USC, will receive special teams player Jason Trusnik, receiver Chansi Stuckey, and two draft picks which look like a third and fifth rounder.

Former Jets coach Eric Mangini isn’t shy about trading with his former team. The Jets now have Mark Sanchez and Braylon Edwards thanks to Mangini and the price to acquire them was not steep.

Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery will be a nice one-two punch as Jets receivers. Edwards hasn’t panned out with Cleveland since being selected third overall in the 2004 NFL draft. He has great size and speed but hasn’t put it all together yet. He has had some rifts with coaches and fans in Cleveland.

Lebron James just recently called out Edwards for reportedly punching his friend in Cleveland. The NFL is investigating the matter. Does this mean LeBron won’t be coming to the Knicks?

Braylon gets a fresh start with the Jets and if he can put it all together he can be a top receiver in this league. Mark Sanchez gets a strong receiver to throw on the opposite side of the field from Cotchery.

Edwards has 10 receptions for 139 yards in four games with the Browns this season. His best season was 2007 when he caught 80 balls for 1289 yards with 16 touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl.
