Jets Lose Two Pro Bowlers in Consecutive Weeks

Another week in the books and another blow to the Jets. In consecutive weeks, the Jets have lost two Pro Bowl players for the remainder of 2009. Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins went down with a torn ACL against Buffalo and running back/return man Leon Washington went down with a broken fibula against the Raiders.

There’s nothing else the Jets can do but try to replace Jenkins and Washington as best as possible. The middle of the Jets defensive line isn’t going to be as strong without Jenkins and the Jets kick return game isn’t going to be as strong without Washington. The Jets running game should be fine since rookie Shonn Greene had a breakout game against the Raiders. It appears Danny Woodhead will see some time back at running back and add extra depth at the position.

I expect the Jets to do the right thing with Leon Washington and give him a decent contract over the offseason. They wouldn’t budge before this season but they’ll work out a deal in the coming offseason. Washington isn’t going to get the Maurice Jones-Drew figures he covets but he’ll get a good deal.

Knowing how competitive Jenkins and Washington are, they will be ready to make an impact on the Jets in 2010.

Jets Week 6 Receivers and Notes

Jets receivers Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) and Brad Smith (quadriceps) are both doubtful for the Jets week six game against the Bills at the Meadowlands. They have not been ruled out yet but it seems unlikely they will play. David Clowney becomes the number two receiver and the Jets have signed former NCAA rushing record holder Danny Woodhead to the active roster as a receiver. Woodhead has been practicing with the offense all week out of the slot. The Jets are thin at receiver without Cotchery and Smith.

In other news, the FBI is investigating threats made to Braylon Edwards after he allegedly punched a man outside a Cleveland night club.

The Jets started the season 3-0 but have lost two straight since and are tied with New England for first place in the AFC East. Their offense and defense have taken turns having poor games the last two weeks. In their loss to New Orleans two weeks ago, the Jets offense looked horrible while their defense looked like one of the best in the NFL. Last week in the Jets loss to Miami, their defense was pushed around and beat by the wildcat but their offense played well. The Jets look to put it all together against the Bills on Sunday.

Giants and Jets Make Final Cuts

The deadline has passed for NFL teams to cut their rosters down to 53 players and the Giants and Jets had tough decisions to make before the deadline.

Giants:

David Tyree was the most well-known name cut by the Giants.  Tyree, who had the incredible catch against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, is now without a team as the Giants had seven receivers ranked higher than him on their depth chart.  Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, “David Tyree is such a class act.  What a great guy he is. When he came in to see me, I had a lot of emotions running through my head. He put everything at ease, he had a big smile on his face. I told David he is forever etched in the annals of New York Giants history. That will never change. That moment in history will stand forever in time.”

The Giants also cut quarterbacks Andre Woodson and Rhett Bomar leaving only two quarterbacks on the roster (Manning and Carr).

The Giants cut WR David Tyree, S Vince Anderson, WR Shaun Bodiford, DL Anthony Bryant, QB Rhett Bomar, DT Jeremy Clark, DL Maurice Evans, DL Robert Henderson, DL Tommie Hill, LB Kenny Ingram, S Travonti Johnson, OL Cliff Louis, RB Allen Patrick, OL Terrence Pennington, S Sha’reff Rashad, OL Orrin Thompson, QB Andre’ Woodson, CB DeAndre Wright and FB Dwayne Wright.

Jets:

The most intriguing story with the Jets was someone they didn’t cut.  Danny Woodhead made the team as the fourth running back after an impressive preseason game against the Eagles where he ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns.  Jets coach Rex Ryan said, “I think Woodhead earned that spot.  I don’t know what he could’ve done more in trying to claiming a job. I thought the guy did a tremendous job for us.”  Woodhead is a fan favorite and the NCAA career leading rusher.

Special teams standout Larry Izzo made the team as did cornerback Drew Coleman.

The Jets cut CB Rashad Barksdale. TE Kevin Brock, TE Kareem Brown, S Emanuel Cook, LB Kenwin Cummings, OL Stanley Daniels, WR Britt Davis, K Parker Douglass, WR Marcus Henry, RB Anthony Kimble, DL Matt Kroul, T Nevin McCaskill, OT Ryan McKee, C Michael Parenton, DE Zach Potter, TE Jack Simmons and DL Ty Steinkuhler.
