Darrelle Revis hasn’t shied away from talking about personnel moves the Jets should make. Last week Revis said he wants the Jets to re-sign cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

But Revis isn’t stopping at current Jets’ personnel. Now he wants a player under contract with another team to become a Jet. That player is Chad Johnson.

Revis told Kristian Dyer of Metro, “I want Chad to come here and play for us, to be a Jet. I’ve been in his ear a lot about it this week … I think he could do well here. I’ve been telling him to come here.”

Revis and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha spoke last year during Pro Bowl week about teaming up, but that didn’t come to fruition. It is unlikely Chad Johnson becoming a Jet comes to fruition either.

Chad Johnson recently spoke about wanting to play for a coach like Rex Ryan on The T Ocho Show.

David White (@bydavidwhite) of the San Francisco Chronicle had a series of tweets regarding recent addition to the upcoming NFL free agent class Nnamdi Asomugha (read from the bottom up):

Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News has reported that it is unlikely Asomugha winds up with the Jets:

Despite speculation that unrestricted free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha may want to play for the Jets, it’s unlikely at this point that he’ll join Gang Green, according to sources. Asomugha’s three-year, $45.3 million contract that he signed with the Raiders in 2009 was voided because he didn’t reach playing time or statistical incentives this season.

Although Asomugha joining forces with Darrelle Revis in the secondary is a frightening notion for offensive coordinators across the league, expect the Jets’ offseason priority to be re-signing their own players. Of course, never rule anything completely out with the Jets’ active front office.

Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who was acquired in a trade from San Diego in the offseason, is set to become a free agent after this season. The addition of Cromartie has given the Jets arguably the best one-two punch of cornerbacks in the NFL. Cromartie has been up and down this season and the Jets have given no indication that they plan on re-signing him this offseason.

The availability of Asomugha may interest the Jets. He is widely considered one of the top two or three cornerbacks in the league. It may come down to the Jets choosing between Cromartie and Asomugha, and Cromartie will be the cheaper one of the two. That may be the deciding factor for the Jets since they have a slew of in-house players that they’ll need to consider re-signing this offseason, such as Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and David Harris.

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York graded the Jets in a midseason report card. What stood out to me from Cimini’s report card was the following:

Biggest concern: Depth at cornerback; Jets will struggle against wide-open passing teams.

After the Jets were ousted by the Colts’ stellar passing attack in the AFC championship, the team made it their business to improve in that area. In addition to having arguably the best cornerback in the league, Darrelle Revis, the Jets went out and traded for cornerback Antonio Cromartie. After the transaction, the Revis-Cromartie tandem was widely considered the best cornerback duo in the league. The Jets weren’t done bolstering themselves at cornerback, however. They used their first round draft pick, 29th overall, on cornerback Kyle Wilson out of Boise State. The plan was that the cornerback trio would be too much for opposing passing attacks. Single coverages by Revis and Cromartie would allow a safety to help the rookie Wilson against three receiver sets and the Jets could also blitz more defenders because of the strong single coverage they would have. The Jets would have three former first-round picks in their secondary and would be absolutely horrifying to pass against.

But things haven’t gone according to plan. Revis was hampered by injury during the first several weeks of the season and Wilson hasn’t lived up to expectations. Given an early opportunity to start at cornerback due to Revis’ holdout and injury, Wilson didn’t play well. Actually, he played his way out of the top three cornerback spots on the roster.

If Revis looks like the ’09 Revis in the second half of the season, the fact that Cromartie is better than former Jet cornerback Lito Sheppard means the Jets have upgraded their secondary from a year ago. But as Cimini stated, the depth isn’t there. After Revis and Cromartie, the Jets are weak at cornerback. Drew Coleman is currently third on the depth chart at cornerback and Wilson isn’t even seeing the field anymore.

This falls on the rookie’s shoulders. When the Jets drafted Kyle Wilson, they thought they solved their issue at cornerback. It’s not like they were asking Wilson to be a number one cornerback and to cover top receivers. They were asking Wilson, a late first round pick, to be the nickel back. Cornerback Devin McCourty, drafted by New England two picks ahead of the Jets, has done a great job so far this season and he is starting for the Pats. Insert McCourty as the Jets’ nickel back and that is the best cornerback group in the NFL.

Anybody want to go back in time to draft day and force the Jets to pick a pass rusher or defensive lineman in the first round? I do. But hindsight is always 20-20.

The Jets are going to need Drew Coleman and Dwight Lowery to play over their heads in order to stop potent air attacks. The team also has other things to worry about other than their depth at cornerback, but if the Jets go up against a stellar passing attack in a big game like they did in the 2009 AFC championship, they may find themselves on the wrong side of the score again.

Revis, we love you, but sit your butt on the bench until you are 100%. The Jets can’t afford to lose you for an extended period of time, which could include pivotal games down the stretch and playoff games, because you pushed yourself to come back to play in a few games in the first half of the season when you weren’t quite ready. What happened with the whole holdout situation is in the rearview mirrow, let’s not make a mistake by putting you out on the field before you are completely ready. We can’t risk further injury.

It looks like Revis has come to his senses. Revis told the New York Daily News, “The smartest thing is to let this thing rest and let it heal right.”

Rex Ryan, who let Revis decide if he would play against the Vikings, isn’t going to let Revis make that decision again. Ryan will make the decision according to the New York Daily News.

The Jets travel to Denver to play the Broncos this weekend and follow that up with a bye. After the bye, the Jets host the Packers, then travel to Detroit and Cleveland the following two weeks, respectively. The Jets have shown that they can win without Revis (wins over Miami and Buffalo in weeks 3 and 4) and I’d think about giving him as much time as possible to get his hamstring totally healed. If that means missing the next four games then that’s what needs to be done. I don’t want him to sit out against Denver and through the bye just to come back against the Packers when he’s not ready. The Jets’ soft schedule after Green Bay could allow Revis to get five consecutive weeks off and the Jets would still have a great shot at going 4-0 during that span. Of course, if he’s ready, truly ready, he should come back once that happens, but if he’s not ready until the Lions game, I’d give him an extra two weeks and sit him out that game and the Cleveland game. I don’t see the harm in doing that and having Revis come back when the Jets host the Texans in Week 11. In this occasion, he’ll be back in the swing of things for the final stretch of the regular season and playoffs.

The Jets defense can now take off and shoot for elite status. With Revis back after a lengthy holdout, the Jets depth at cornerback increases tremendously. Rookie Kyle Wilson, the teams’ first round pick, becomes the nickelback and the Jets become that much harder to pass against. In the AFC Championship games against the Colts last season, the Jets secondary was lit up in the second half and a lack of depth at cornerback hurt them. With the additions of Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson, along with Revis, the Jets cornerback group is one of the best in the NFL.

The Jets defense as whole, however, aims to be the best in the league more so.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports had some interesting, relative words about the Jets defense:

Revis is a different cornerback. He’s not only athletic, he’s tough. Unlike Cromartie, an incredible athlete with no taste for the rough stuff of the game, Revis isn’t afraid to throw his body around. Revis can play zone and he can get up in a receiver’s face and duke it out. Pick your poison, he’s deadly.Certainly far more than anybody else on the Jets defense, a unit that doesn’t include nearly the number of stars people think. From Bart Scott to Kris Jenkins to David Harris, the Jets defense is a bunch of really good players, but not a lot who stir the drink.

This is not what Baltimore put together in 2000, when the Ravens won the Super Bowl behind one of the greatest defenses ever. Ryan was the defensive line coach and the Ravens featured Ray Lewis, Sam Adams, Tony Siragusa, Rob Burnett, Mike McCrary, Peter Boulware and Chris McAlister all playing at their peak.

This is not the 1985 Bears unit that Ryan’s dad, Buddy, ran. That defense included Hall of Famers Mike Singletary and Dan Hampton, plus Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, Wilbur Marshall and Gary Fencik. By contrast, the Jets are much more a group whose sum is more than the value of the individual parts.

That final sentence struck me and, man, is it true for the Jets defense. It’s the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts — or Synergy.

Synergy is the sixth habit in Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Synergy is the first habit in Rex Ryan’s playbook The 7 Habits of Highly Effect Defenses. Rex Ryan’s defense is like a well-oiled machine with 11 moving parts. All 11 parts must work together to make this machine run at peak level. Darrelle Revis may be the most well-polished part of the machine, but he still needs the rest of the parts to be working well for him to remain at a high level so the machine can run at its peak.

I guess I did learn something in college after all!
