The Mets have made news the day after the World Series by declining their $9.1 million option on reliever JJ Putz, this according to Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post. The Mets will pay $1 million to buy him out.

In his first and only season with the Mets, Putz had a 5.22 ERA in 29 appearances and a 1-4 record. He had right elbow surgery in June that ended his season.

Met reliever JJ Putz has also been shut down for the remainder of the year.  Putz already had elbow surgery but a new MRI showed new issues. 

Already with a miniscule postseason chance, the loss of Santana will mark the definitive end of the Mets’ 2009 postseason hopes.
